Support for Mums

Being a mum is tough – you don’t have to go through it alone. Whether you’re struggling with your mental health, feeling overwhelmed, or just want to talk to someone who understands, we’re here for you. Where ever you are in your maternal journey.

Happy Mums is just one part of a network of support available to mums across Cumbria. We focus on peer support, because we know that talking to someone who’s been through something similar can make a real difference.

Why Peer Support?

We believe in the power of mums supporting mums. Peer support is about listening, sharing, and being alongside each other without judgement.

Peer support can help you to:

  • Feel less alone

  • Be heard and understood

  • Build confidence and hope

  • Take small, kind steps towards feeling better

Our team of trained volunteers have their own lived experience of maternal mental health. They’re not here to fix or diagnose – they’re here to walk alongside you.

Ways We Can Support You

Join a Support Group

Our peer-led groups are safe, welcoming spaces for mums. They run in person and online, and you don’t need a referral – just turn up as you are.

Getting Help Elsewhere

There are lots of brilliant organisations across Cumbria and beyond who can also support you. We’ve gathered links to services that can help with mental health, money worries, housing, domestic abuse and more.

Looking After Yourself

When you’re doing your best to care for others, it’s easy to forget yourself. This section shares simple, gentle self-care tips and stories from mums who’ve been there.

If you need immediate help, and in the case of serious injury, call 999 or go straight to A&E

“I don’t know where I would be without them. They saved me. I felt like everywhere I turned to was saying ‘no’, ‘you’re not ill enough’, ‘you’ve not got the right diagnosis’ ‘your child is too old for us to support you now’.

Happy Mums accepted me for who I am, without a label or a referral, I just went along to my local group, I was nervous but everyone was welcoming. I was worried about cliques but there wasn’t any. I was so nice to be able to say how I felt without having to justify it. And to be listened to, not judged.

Thank you Happy Mums.”
